The awards were held on 10 August in Docklands, Melbourne, where winners were awarded across 42 categories.
Melbourne-based Franklin Web printed 10 of the winning catalogues – the most by any single print company.
However, the combined total of IPMG companies Offset Alpine and Hannanprint was 13.
And while catalogues printed by PMP took just seven gongs, its total tally at the ceremony climbed to 17 when including nods for distribution and pre-press.
The real winner looks to be the catalogue sector itself. Anyone questioning whether print still plays a pivotal role in the communication landscape need only add up the runs lengths of all the entries being judged – more than 100 million catalogues.
AIW Printing and Printworld each printed two winning catalogues, while Flow Printing, Inprint, SOS Print & Media, Southern Colour NSW and The Place to Print each had one winner.
Meanwhile, the bosses of PMP, Franklin Web and IPMG took the chance to rally behind catalogues as a print media channel with a “bright future”.
Franklin Web director Phil Taylor said people responded well to catalogues because they provided a relaxed and convenient way to research products.
Catalogues are becoming even more relevant with the increased use of interactivity, he added. “The more interactive catalogues can be, the more relevant they’re going to be.”
IPMG chief executive Stephen Anstice told ProPrint that catalogues had a “very bright” future across the full range from low-cost to high-end.
High-end catalogues work well for companies that want to show their quality, while simpler catalogues are a good fit for companies selling every-day products, he said.
“The catalogue has to suit what the client wants to achieve,” he said.
PMP chief executive Richard Allely said part of the reason catalogues were getting better was because creatives were providing printers with higher-quality files.
“This year was a good year for us, certainly a good year for our clients and it’s a recognition that the industry has really lifted performance in a variety of areas,” he said.
“[If you compared catalogues] year on year and compared the quality to last year, the whole game seems to have lifted.”
Allely told ProPrint that it was time catalogues received due credit.
“Don’t underestimate the impact that catalogues in letterboxes have for the Australian economy. They don’t seem to get the credit for stimulus they deserve,” he said.
“Catalogues are growing. It’s the one really positive story in print that catalogue printing year on year has grown in volume and pagination.”
