$26bn office supplies giant wins major Australian print management account

Staples Australia, which is the new name for Corporate Express, beat 20 firms to the three-year contract, which will start in 2013 and encompass print management, distribution and marketing.

Corporate Express was acquired in 2010 by $26 billion-turnover, US-headquartered Staples and took on its parent's name in October.

Staples' local director of marketing and category sales, Geoff White, told ProPrint: "It's the first win we've had under the new name and the first big win we've had in some time."

A key part of Staples' tender was that it offered Schweppes a chance to move to a single-supplier arrangement, said White.

Several industry sources told ProPrint that Ergo Asia is one of the current suppliers, but the firm refused to comment.

White was reluctant to provide details about the technology, but he did reveal that its key feature was the ability to track jobs throughout the supply chain.

He told ProPrint the firm's Print Solutions division was well positioned to score more big wins in the next 12 months. He pointed to Staples' investment in technology and the financial stability it could offer as part of a $26 billion company.

White wouldn't be drawn on the value of the Schweppes contract, but confirmed it was a multimillion-dollar deal that included multiple one-year options.

Schweppes' head of corporate affairs, Robyn Newman, told ProPrint: "The advantage of moving to Staples is that they can provide us with a fully integrated system for the end-to-end provision of marketing services support.

"This means that our end users have a seamless one-stop shop, which will be easier to use, more efficient and provide greater visibility and reporting metrics."

Staples will manage the account from Schweppes' Melbourne premises.
