Abel Labels goes digital with SurePress

Tasmanian label printer Abel Labels has expanded into digital with its investment in an Epson SurePress L-4033AW printer.

Since having it installed, the SurePress has been put to use producing labels for Tasmania’s gourmet foods, wine, beer and cider.

The machine joins Abel’s gamut of flexographic and letterpress equipment. Managing director Trent Cowen says the SurePress opens up new capabilities in digital for the business.

“The SurePress has put us in the market for short run, high class, multi-colour jobs,” Cowen explains. “We are the first label printer in Tasmania to install a serious digital press. This gives us an advantage in quality and flexibility over our local competitors.”

Cowen says he was drawn to the SurePress due to its affordability, the machine is on the lower end of the price bracket and being digital, removes the need to purchase plates.

With the SurePress, Abel is also reporting reduced production costs through savings in job preparation, setup and stock waste while also generating more income for the business.

In addition to the cost-savings, Cowen says he is also impressed by the quality of its production, “The L-4033AW impressed us from the get go with the quality of the print and the fast changeover from one job to the next being the deal breakers.

“Being able to leave the press running and monitoring jobs from your computer was another big plus.”

Cowen says the SurePress is kept continuously running in its own climate controlled room and the business has started transferring existing jobs from its letterpress machines to the digital printer.
