AusPost postcards hit with multi-month delays

Australia Post had an idea to adapt postcards for the digital age: Using a mobile app, travellers could take a photo from wherever they were in the world, write a message, and Post would print the card in Australia and mail it home.

There was just one problem, many of the postcards took months to arrive or disappeared without a trace.

According to Business Insider, one traveller sent a postcard from Europe to his father-in-law using the app in February but it was not postmarked until May 20 and did not arrive until July.

The website was even sent a picture of the belated postcard with the postmark clearly shown, along with the February 1 day it was ordered printed at the bottom.

Another European holidaymaker also says they sent several postcards in January and only one has arrived so far, also postmarked May 20.

Australia Post’s website now says the service is ‘being updated’ and that there have been delays printing the postcards.

“We're having some delays printing postcards for current orders. If you've ordered a postcard that hasn't arrived, please contact us for a full refund,” it says.

A spokesperson says all postcards have now been printed and dispatched, and the ‘upgrading’ and ‘enhancing functionality’ should be complete later this month and the service up and running again.

The app is free to download and each postcard costs $1.99 to send to Australia and $2.99 to send overseas. All postcards are printed by Australia Post in Australia.
