Aussie print reseller launches low-cost 3D printer that uses paper

DGS 3D, the 3D division of Sydney-based graphic arts reseller Digital Graphic Supplies, has signed up as the exclusive local dealer of the Mcor Iris, a low-cost 3D printer that uses standard copy paper to build realistic models.

Connor Moore, managing director of DGS 3D, told ProPrint that the low cost and ease of using standard copy motivated the distributor to chase a partnership with Ireland-based Mcor.

According to DGS 3D, the cost per model is $0.0041 per cubic centimeter for white models and $0.04-$0.05 for full-colour models. This makes it around 20 times less expensive per build than rival technologies and about one-fifth of the ongoing costs "of any other 3D printing technology", claimed the dealer.

Office chain megastore Staples recently opened its first '3D Experience Centre' in the Netherlands, part of its major push into the field.

Since 2012, customers have been able to order 3D-printed models via the Staples website and pick them up in-store or have them shipped.

DGS's Moore said the machine's use of paper, "the original and natural medium for coloured ink", allowed for high-resolution colour models, as well as a robust build.

"Imagine trying to tear apart a ream of paper. Now imagine that ream glued and pressed page-by-page – that's how tough these models are," according to DGS.

The Mcor Iris offers resolutions of 5,760×1,440x508dpi and costs $57,450, fully installed with training and one-year warranty.

Australians will get their first chance to clap eyes on the device when DGS hosts an open night in Sydney on 25 July, where it expects guests from leading retailers, car makers and universities to attend.

DGS resells brands such as Roland DG, Fuji Xerox and Agfa into the printing industry.
