Cheque-Mates wants to be your cheque mate

Cheque-Mates has installed a new digital printer to cut turnaround times and go after trade work from printers outsourcing their cheque printing.

Chief executive Rodney Frost says the new Fuji Xerox Nuvera 144 high production monochrome printer it bought at PrintEx15 will provide reliable trade work long term.

“A lot of cheque printers have old machines that need updating, but with cheques declining so fast it might not be worth the investment, so we are buying the latest technology to offer it as a trade service,” he says.

Frost says the majority of machines in the industry with magnetic ink character recognition (MICR) capability, needed for printing the security features of cheques, will have end of life in two years, and with declining demand many will face a challenge to get business with MICR.

“We think this new machine will have five to eight years life and it will also allow us to do monochrome so we can pick up some laser work as well,” he says.

“But the main reason we are investing in this press is that many businesses will be only have a small portion of their work that may need MICR and so we will be able to offer them this solution.

“It is all about offering clients with something extra and extending a helping hand.”

Frost says Cheque-Mates has been performing well in the past two years, but the price increases by Australia Post for bulk mail has affected the business.

“Times have changed, marketers used to send thousands of the same mail to a customer, which was a lot of waste”, he says.

“Now it’s more about tailored direct mail that targets certain markets and customers. So the business is going well in that regard.”

Fuji Xerox says the Nuvera 144 has more than 300 patents and MICR technologies, delivering image quality that is quickly recognisable by reader or sorters.

“This system offers the flexibility, productivity and reliability for all the jobs it gets,” the manufacturer says.
