CMY-RGB colour system patented in the US by Gold Coast company

The system, which claims to be able to match “100% of the most popular spot colour libraries”, was granted the patent following a number of years of R&D and international testing.

The Opaltone system uses self-developed inks and RIP systems integrated onto existing Epson inkjet printers to help pre-press houses, design agencies and printers produce accurate colour proofs at a low-cost.

According to Opaltone the system combines cyan, magenta, yellow, red, green and blue inks to produce bright colours that can’t typically be achieved through conventional methods.

Opaltone Australasia managing director Steve Holman described the patent approval as a “truly exciting moment for our company”.

“We decided to develop a system of proofing for ourselves. We decided to target inkjet printers and create our own inks and rips to produce accurate colours at a very cost-effective price.”

Scientific Games, a lottery ticket printer in Sydney, has been beta-testing with Opaltone for two years and has been saving $30,000 a year with the technology.

Print operations manager Pat Dowd said: “The pre-existing way we used to make a proof was through a waterproofing system, which would take one-and-a-half hours for one proof and cost around $100.

“Now proofs only cost a few dollars and are more accurate, it is also so simple to edit and reprint a proof, which has certainly made life a lot easier,” he added.
