ColourChiefs providing production muscle for popular iPhone apps

ColourChiefs director John Fletcher told ProPrint that the 30-staff firm landed Bundaberg Brewed Drinks about three months ago based on a referral.

It now handles all of Bundaberg's point-of-sale work, he added.

ColourChiefs also works for Touchnote, an iPhone app that automates delivery of photo files from the smartphone to be printed as postcards and sent to Australian addresses, said Fletcher.

ColourChiefs uses rules-based automation in its Prinergy workflow to automatically download the Australian orders every morning and deliver them to an HP Indigo 7500. They are then dispatched on the same day.

"No one touches a job until it pops out of the Indigo," said Fletcher.

"During the Olympics, we were doing a couple thousand postcards per day. On a typical day, we're probably doing about 500 postcards per day."

ColourChiefs became partners with Touchnote in May 2012, said Fletcher.

"It's not a large part of our business, but it's a good extension of our web-to-print. We've invested quite a bit of technology in our web-to-print," he said.

"We've been involved in web-to-print for about five years. Over the past three years we've seen substantial growth in the web-to-print side of our business, and we're doing a lot more B2B."

ColourChiefs also does the printing for Uniqify, an app that allows users to personalise iPhone cases with photos or artwork. The jobs are printed on an Océ Arizona 360.

Fletcher said it was important to diversify given the decline in general commercial print.

"It's all about being a lean manufacturer these days and doing something different," he said.
