Cyber says ‘seeing is believing’

The Singapore-based company, which has the Ryobi agency in this region, is running regular demos of a Ryobi 920 and a five-colour 520 – and, as if the point needs to be made, the badges quite deliberately include the words ‘offset press’.

Managing director Bernard Cheong was emphatic: “We’re a strong believer that offset is still the dominant mode of printing.”

When the PacPrint Daily suggested Cyber could have just brought brochures and talked about its Ryobis, Cheong said: “Seeing is believing.. You can talk about it, but when you see something, it makes a huge difference.”

Cheong conceded that hauling heavy metal to the show had been “expensive” but he was buoyed by “a lack of tyre kickers… printers here are very serious about doing something for their business”. And yes, he still sees PacPrint as an offset show.

Cyber senior demonstrator John McCallum added: “So many people have come up and said, ‘thanks for putting these machines out on show’. I had one gentleman here, RSL badge, would have been 80, and he said ‘good on you’.”

The decision to display sheetfed litho kit was driven by hard business considerations. Cheong said he had reason to be confident both the 920 and 520 would be sold off the floor before the end of PacPrint.

Cyber also has a foot in the production digital camp, with a Ryobi B2-format liquid-toner press set to premier at JGAS in Tokyo in October and due for release in Australia early in 2014, he said.

At 10,000sph, the as-yet unbranded machine will square off against HP Indigo, Kodak NexPress and Xerox to handle mid-volume work at 1200dpi with VDP.
