EFI software spans unprofitable ‘islands’ in the print workflow

This is the first local trade show appearance for the giant US company since it made a bevy of acquisitions and product launches over the past 18 months.

The workflow starts with online orders via EFI Digital StoreFront or Online Print Solutions, which was added via its acquisition of the Australian company late last year.

EFI technical sales specialist Allan Larson showed the PacPrint Daily how jobs ordered via DSF or OPS can be sent to one of the vendor’s MIS products, such as Pace, which is aimed at general commercial printers.

Larson explained that Pace “hooks up and downstream” into EFI Fiery for digital jobs or third-party workflows for offset print, such as Kodak Prinergy.

Thanks to EFI’s work integrating with third-party workflows, information is not only passed down the line but also back to the MIS, for instance, to show how many sheets have been pulled or to provide productivity data.

Workflow integration is a key part of the picture. Frank Mallozzi, EFI senior vice president of worldwide sales & marketing, revealed that former Prism staff who had joined EFI via its acquisition of the Australian MIS developer had been trained to connect Pace to third-party workflows.

He said EFI’s mission was to eliminate disconnected “islands of manufacturing”.

“If three guys have to touch the job, you may have lost your profits.”

Visitors can also get a demo of the newest incarnation of Fiery, FS 100, which offers processing times that are up to two to three times faster than previous systems thanks to effective use of multiple processing cores. This greater productivity should come in handy for resource-hungry tasks, such as complex variable-data jobs, said Peter Hoermann, regional support manager at EFI Australia.
