Fairfax prints Australia’s ‘biggest ever calendar’ for weekend SMH and Age

Saturday’s editions of The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age featured an Events NSW calendar the size of eight broadsheet pages.

The ‘Super Panorama’ calendar, which details events happening in Sydney and NSW during 2011, was produced at The Age Print Centre in Melbourne.

Print centre general manager Troy Mansell told ProPrint that the 1600x600mm calendar was produced on the site’s Manroland Geoman press with the aid of a specialised attachment it purchased from Japanese vendor Seken six years ago.

“We’re the only print site in Australia that can produce this format,” he said.

“That attachment allows us to run double the width of the traditional broadsheet.”

Elizabeth Ross, Fairfax Media director of trade marketing and insights, described the work as “the biggest calendar ever seen in print in Australia”, adding that “Fairfax is the only publisher in Australia capable of delivering such a large execution”.

However, Mansell said there were no particular challenges in producing the calendar.

“We’ve produced this kind of work for over five years. It’s like a normal production for us,” he said.

Events NSW chief executive Geoff Parmenter said the government wanted to convey how the NSW Events Calendar had grown to comprise more than 80 events across the state.

“The Super Panorama is a terrific way to reflect this message, as its sheer size and scale gave us the opportunity to present the 2011 NSW Events Calendar to readers in a way we’ve never done before. It has taken the promotion of the calendar to a new level,” he said.

The Age Print Centre, which is based in the suburb of Tullamarine and cost $220m, commenced operations in January 2003.
