Ferag brings newspaper publishers back into the fold

The company has revisited the quarterfold and devised a means of achieving it using its new StreamFold system, to enable newspaper printers and publishers to offer a simpler, faster and more flexible process for external clients, and to meet the increasing demand for newspaper supplements and inserts which need the third fold to fit into the host newspaper.

At an event at the company’s headquarters in Hinwil, Switzerland, Ferag CEO Jurg Mockli told assembled journalists that the StreamFold system is a new member of the company’s “Value Added” family of products, such as the MemoStick, which can enhance a newspaper publisher/printer’s range of products and services.

He pointed out that flyers, inserts and special sections usually have to be folded into newspapers to fit, and to create a third fold in a newspaper scenario is very demanding. Previously, the quarterfold could only be done with limited flexibility, restricted speed and limited paginations.

“The Streamfold can be added to any system,” he said, “using Ferag’s range of feed and delivery systems, making it highly versatile.”

The StreamFold system is capable of folding up to 60,000 products an hour, and can be integrated into any existing Ferag system using its UTR conveyor technology and any delivery station. A JetFeeder hopper can be used to enable offline production, and it is easily movable between lines.

It uses a “notched W-fold” to eradicate bad folds, especially in high pagination products, after which the products are “crunched” for a neat final appearance.

It will be debuted at Ifra-Expo 2009, and will be available commercially from January 2010. Ferag Australia managing director Thomas Klumpp told ProPrint that he believes this system will find ready acceptance in the local market with its simple and economical solution to a common problem, and its ability to provide value-added services. Ferag has suggested a price of about 170,000 Euros for the StreamFold system.

The function also included a demonstration of a configuration of the company’s poly-bagging system, as well as a demonstration of the complete PolyStream system that is to be installed at Prinovis in Liverpool, UK.

Steve Crowe travelled to Switzerland as a guest of Ferag.
