Ferrostaal forced to downsize

Ferrostaal Australasia has responded to a fall in revenue by laying off staff.

Chief executive Markus Haefeli said the distributor had responded to the “challenging” times the industry had faced in the past three or four years.

“Locally in Australia and New Zealand we have experienced a slowdown in sales,” he announced in a statement.

“To address this situation we have taken the decision to restructure our business. This includes a reduction in staff, which means, unfortunately, that we have to part ways with some of our colleagues, many which are well-known to you.

“Please be assured that this does not affect the services we provide to our customers and partners. We will still have the same geographical coverage, however with fewer people in each state.”

Haefeli declined to reveal how many staff had been made redundant when contacted by ProPrint.

He added in the statement: “With regards to service, we have now structured this in such a way that the engineers, who we have let go, will start their own businesses and work for us on a contract basis. This means we retain their skills that we all value.

“Through the above actions, we are in a stronger position to support the future business in the best possible way.”
