Finer Finish brings CTP in-house

Finer Finish owner Russell Edwards told ProPrint the company could reduce the $100,000 it spent last year sourcing plates from trade houses thanks to its new Glunz & Jensen iCTP PlateWriter 2400.

Edwards said Finer Finish had wanted  to get a CTP [system] for a long time. It purchased the 2400 through AGS Allpoints after inspecting the machine at a site in North Melbourne.

“The government incentive to purchase the machine was very good. And the quality they got out of the unit was quite superb,” he said.

As well as reducing costs, Edwards said the ease of operation of bringing plate making in-house was a major appeal.

“Now if something does go wrong, it’s just a matter of ‘click-click’ on the machine, and there’s another plate there in 20 minutes,” he said.

Laverton-based Finer Finish uses two single-colour Heidelberg GTO presses, as well as a Komori A2 press. Edwards estimated that the company ran through up to 100 plates a month on the GTOs and another 40 plates on the Komori.

The deployment marks the second recent installation of the 2400, after Mildura-based Park Douglas Printing also purchased the system from AGS.

Park Douglas owners Shane Smith, Chris Smith (pictured right) and Shane Daymond (pictured left) said the environment motivated their purchase.

“Our old imagesetter and processor were getting very tired and we wanted to make sure we were doing our best to be as green as we could possibly be.

“Given the ease of using the system, the time saved, no developers, and a remarkable difference in the quality of our print, it’s been a great investment.”

Park Douglas Printing specialises in the producing coasters for pubs and clubs across Australia. It uses a pair of two-colour Solna presses, as well as a single-colour Heidelberg A2.

“Given the distance we are from the major cities, we wanted a system that was simple and easy to maintain, with no costly maintenance contracts and at an affordable price,” Chris Smith said.
