Former apprentice takes top job at Horizon Graphics

Mezgec (pictured) took the role of managing director as well as taking full ownership last month, after purchasing the business from Chris Judson, who founded it over 30 years ago.

Mezgec joined the screen printer 19 years ago as an apprentice, and had worked his way up through the ranks to become a partial stakeholder in the company.

He told ProPrint the opportunity to fully take over the business arose as Judson moved into a phase of “semi-retirement”.

Mezgec added that the company, based in the north shore suburb of Chatswood, would look at bringing on another apprentice early next year.

“We’ll probably bring someone on so I can take my work out of the factory and into more of a managerial role, though I don’t want to sit entirely in the office,” he said.

Mezgec said his main goal was to improve the speed and efficiency of the business.

“Last year we purchased a machine that sped up production and made us more efficient, and we’re looking to improve on that,” he said.

“In a couple of years we’ll probably look at getting another machine, but what we can do now is concentrate on having quality products and producing work faster.”
