Fuji Xerox attacks mid-range digital market

Fuji Xerox has entered the highly competitive mid-range digital printer market with the Versant 2100 Press, targeting digital printers that want high productivity but do not have the volume to fill a high-capacity machine.

The new Versant comes onto the market at a time when the big print engine developers are almost all launching new printers; last month Konica Minolta launched its new 1060 / 1070 range, and next month Canon will release a new mid-range colour printer. At the same time sales of new A3 offset presses are shrinking fast, highlighting the changing world of the print industry.

Fuji Xerox hardware marketing manager Jay Daley says the new Versant 2100 sits between the lower-end J75 and the Color 800 Press, giving printers needing the production capabilities and automation features of the Color 800 with a smaller investment.

“It sits in a position in the market that is almost a new segment for us – the market has progressed to the point where we need a product in this position,” he says.

“We have a tremendous number of clients who do not yet have the volume for the Color 800 and can use the 2100 as a stepping stone to the next level.

“The speed and quality of the 2100 are the same as the C800, so for customers without that big volume requirement it’s great.”

The 2100 offers average monthly volumes of 75,000 to 250,000 impressions and will print up to 100 full-colour A4 prints per minute or 52ppm of A3 on paper stocks from 52gsm to 350gsm, including auto perfecting.

Fuji Xerox says it is ideal for creating the products now demanded by print buyers for fast-paced, digital marketing: vivid, colour-accurate, personalised communications, brochures, photo publishing opportunities and specialty products.

Daley says the 2100 will compete with the Konica Minolta bizhub C8000, Ricoh C901 and the upcoming Canon printer, but claims the production and quality will be better.

“Built from the ground up, we have lifted the bar when it comes to productivity and flexibility, with fully automated colour control, broad media handling and speeds up to 100ppm. On top of all of this we are delivering outstanding, near-offset image quality,” he says.

“It is outstanding quality in its class.”

Printers can order the 2100 now, with the first machines touching down in August.

Fujii Xerox is still the number one digital print supplier. It has sold more than 400 of its C75/J75 printers in the last year.
