Fujifilm wins $30m Fairfax plate contract

Fujifilm's Australian and New Zealand divisions have been awarded the three-year contract to supply all the Fairfax printing sites on both sides of the Tasman. The deal has been valued at $30 million.

Fujifilm national newspaper specialist Warren Hinder, who was the driving force behind the contract win, said Fujifilm had taken over Kodak's share of the contract.

"We had a component of the business. We had all of New Zealand and Chullora and Beresfield and recently Border Mail in Australia," he told ProPrint.

"Border Mail was only recently converted to our plates. Chullora and Beresfield have been running with our products for more than five years."

Fujifilm will install Brillia thermal heat-sensitive CTP systems in all the Fairfax sites that currently run Kodak thermal systems, said Hinder. The major plants at North Richmond, Ballarat and Canberra will then receive Brillia violet light-sensitive systems, he added.

Fujifilm will also replace lots of processors across many of the Fairfax sites and install six Nela benders, he said.

"This is built on long-term relationships and selling a consistently reliable product. We've always had that strength in the reliability of our products," he told ProPrint.

Hinder said Fujifilm has also been supplying the plates for APN's Australian sites for the past seven years and APN's New Zealand sites for most of that time.
