The sold-out event, held at Lowenbrau Keller in The Rocks, Sydney on Friday 22 July, celebrated books and magazines across 15 general categories and four special categories.

Offset Alpine Printing took the biggest swag, with wins across six categories. Its Capabilities book, which had already seen big success at this year’s National Print Awards, took home three Galley Club awards, for ‘Non-standard Book of the Year’, ‘Innovation in Publishing and Printing’ and ‘Non-standard Non-retail Publication’.

The next biggest medal hauls went to a pair of offshore printers, The Imago Group and 1010 Printing Group, which both secured three awards.

Local book printers Griffin Press and BPA each took home a pair of Galley Club awards.

BPA took out the night’s top award, ‘Australian Printed Book of the Year’, for its work on The Sustainable Table. It’s the second time in four years that the Melbourne-based printer won the category.

Managing director Brett Turnley added that he was also “very proud” to have won best ‘Sheetfed Limp sewn/perfect bound/saddle-stitched book with RRP over $25’. “It is the first time in at least 10 years that an Australian-owned and -operated printer has won the award.”

The night marked the end of the reign of Galley Club president Michael Schulz, who will hand over duties after five years at the helm.

Schulz, who is a director at SOS Print & Media, said: “It is a great club. It is a great community and I hope we will have many more great events like this one.”

The new president will be decided at the Galley Club’s AGM in September.

“We are hoping to have some more faces and have someone young take over and have a few more little events throughout the year,” added Schulz.
