Gurnett wins Hexis wrap comp

Cam Gurnett of CRG Designs has beaten out the competition to win the Hexis car wrap design competition, with his vehicle wrap to be installed by the Hexis team at Visual Impact Sydney later this week.

On winning the award, Gurnett says, “It feels great. It is fantastic to be recognised for the work and hours that you put in.

“CRG Designs was started in 2012 as a side business, which I ran for five years while working for another company in Adelaide. I moved to Melbourne in November, and started working out of my own site in January. I specialise in graphic design and vehicle wraps, but do a lot of signage design too.”

Gurnett specialises in vehicle wrapping and design, and has worked with professional off-road racers.

He says, “One of my passions is the off road racing scene. I was lucky enough to do the wrap for Toby Price in the Finke Desert Race, and travelled with him.

“This is my specialty, I pride myself on attention to detail and being able to design for 3D objects like cars, which is not something that everyone can grasp the difficulty on. Wrapping around all four sides of the car is something different to designing for paper.”

Judging was completed by blind submission and carried out by a panel comprising Hexis sales, training and installation experts, as well as representatives from the company’s French marketing team, arranged into three groups of four judges.

Ian Parsonson, managing director, Hexis Australia, says, “Picking the winning design was certainly very difficult. With their varied backgrounds and viewpoints, our judges all provided different feedback and reasons for their top picks. It was interesting to see the slight variances between the judging groups, who each had different perspectives based on the visual, graphic and installation processes involved in each entry.

“It was a nail-biting finish, with scores really close right across the board, but in the end our winner by only two votes, was Cam Gurnett. He did a great job and we sincerely congratulate him for his efforts and the quality of his entry.

“It’s tough to have to choose an overall winner from such great entries – quite honestly, all the designs had merit and we loved the enthusiasm of the entrants and the way they really embraced the task. The creative flair they bring to our industry is what keeps it fresh and new every day, and we are very happy to be able to involve them in this way.”

Gurnett is no stranger to awards, having taken the top prize in a design a Supercar wrap competition, which was held by Penrite Oils. Currently operating as a one man operation, Burnett says he is looking to expand, possibly next year.
