HP acquires 3D tech company

In a bid to boost its capabilities in the 3D printing market, HP has acquired the 3D hardware and software assets of German companies David Vision Systems and David 3D Solutions.

HP says the takeover will boost opportunities for the company in the $7bn 3D scanning market and will also enhance its Sprout technology.

HP Australia introduced Sprout late last year, Sprout technology boasts a desktop 3D scanner with 3D object capture, editing and multiple streamlined 3D print options.

HP says the takeover will allow it to utilise David’s 3D scanning technology to expand Sprout as well as the company’s entire 3D ecosystem.

The company says, “HP will acquire David’s preeminent scanning, stitching and fusing solution that results in radical improvements in scan quality.

“David provides industry-leading 3D scanning technology and solutions with scan algorithms and automates calibration methods,” HP continues.

“This is an essential ingredient to seamlessly blend the physical and virtual worlds, and a core value proposition of Sprout, through which HP will reach a broad range of industry segments, including education, healthcare, design and research.”

As part of the deal HP will acquire David’s team of 3D experts, however further details of the transaction have not been disclosed.

3D took centre stage at the recent drupa trade show, with traditionally 2D-only print companies such as Kodak, Ricoh, Canon and Massivit showcasing their foray into 3D printing technology.

Last month Sydney’s Composite Images became the first printer in New South Wales to invest in a Massivit 1800 3D printer after spotting it at drupa.
