Industry mainstay Frank Atkinson passes on

Industry figures said Atkinson will be remembered for his long and distinguished career in Australian printing and publishing.

Tony Alafaci, former owner of Cupid Wedding Stationery, described Atkison as a “great friend” who had always been there to lend a hand.

“He was an absolute straight and honest person. If he made a commitment to you, he went ahead and did it,” said Alafaci.

“He was a very well-respected guy in the printing industry, not just in Australia, but throughout the world.”

Atkinson began working at Sun Newspapers in 1945 and enjoyed an accomplished career.

In 1970 he joined the Government Printing Office and by 1972 had taken up the position as the Commonwealth Government Printer.

He held various prestigious public sector print positions. In 1991, Atkinson and two other directors formed Quality Assurance Systems International Pty Ltd to develop and implement quality assurance programs for the print and publishing industries.

Atkinson helped Wal Sadlo from Walcar Graphics with his Printing and Graphic Arts Diploma.

Sadlo called Atkinson “a gentleman” who “was very knowledgeable and always very up to date”.

“He worked all his life and he gave a lot to the print industries,” added Sadlo.

Atkinson is survived by his three children.
