LED printing widens Newcastle firm’s base

Newcastle firm Owen Signs will use its new EFI UV wide format printer to promote growth by expanding its product range on a wider variety of materials.

The cool cure LED technology of the EFI H1625 allows the company to print on new substrates like back-lit acrylic, cardboard, glass and aluminum composite material, which cannot withstand the heat of other curing or drying processes.

Managing director David Owen says these areas are top priority as the 40-year-old sign shop invests in new equipment to get more jobs out the door and boost its turnover.

“We have a great customer base and we are really looking forward to expanding our product range to better service our clients’ needs,” he says.

Owen Signs is the first Australian printer to buy the H1625, snapping it up when it debuted on the first day of Visual Impact.

Owen says the printer’s hybrid roll-to-roll and flatbed setup means he will be able to automate more of the company’s workflow.

“We found that we were mounting a significant portion of our work which was time consuming and expensive, but we are able to bypass extra steps in order to get more projects out the door,” he says.

The H1625 prints with minimal VOCs, and EFI says its LED instant on/off lamps can significantly decrease power consumption and provide more consistent imaging with less waste.

Owen Signs produces mainly corporate and architectural signs and has an inhouse design team that is available for trade printing projects.
