Live from drupa 2008

And the crowds have turned up today, although as many exhibitors have noted, they’re not the cheque book carriers. Nevertheless, drupa has pulled them in, and they’re looking at the gamut of technology on show here.

It was almost impossible to move in the two Heidelberg halls, such was the jam of crowds streaming in. Patience really was a virtue if you wanted to kick the tyres on the new XL 162 or XL 145, have a geek at the ten-colour Speedmaster 52 with Anicolor, or any of the many other new developments on show.

Not quite so busy, but obviously still high on the priority list of visitors, was the Innovation Parc in hall 7, where the mix of well-established software developers, major vendors like Kodak, and small start-ups jostled for enquiries from passersby. Most have just a small booth and a laptop, but this can be the birthplace of corporate or R&D dreams.

Several critical conclusions can be drawn now we’re into the third day. The best coffee at the show (and some good pasta) can definitely be found on Italian blanket manufacturer Trelleborg’s stand. The best pastries have been tracked down to Denmark’s Glunz & Jensen, and Belgian manufacturer Esko has a good line in chocolates.
