Marvel Bookbinding calls on new folding technology to retain contract

Managing director Wayne Eastaugh told ProPrint the company had been at risk of losing the work because it had struggled to do so much folding in the November-January production period.

Now, after taking delivery of an MBO T800 Perfection from Ferrostaal, it can do it “with ease”.

The T800 Perfection, a high speed folding machine for offset printed stock, replaced a 15-year-old Heidelberg Stahl T78.

Eastaugh said the Melbourne-based company had been keen to get an MBO as most of its other folding machines were of the same brand.

The staff enjoyed using the T800 Perfection because it was reliable, low maintenance and relatively simple to operate, he added.

“It’s so productive. We’re able to take on more work and do less overtime,” he said.

Marvel is also targeting high-volume and high-end folding jobs after acquiring two other machines from Ferrostaal.

Eastaugh said the Morgana AutoCreaser 50 and Morgana AutoFold Pro had greatly improved efficiency by combining the two processes into one operation.

The 70-person operation had been able to lower its folding costs by about 5% since the November installation, he added.

The AutoCreaser 50 overcomes the problem of cracking normally associated with creasing digitally printed material and can process 8,500 A4 sheets per hour, according to installer Ferrostaal Australia.

The AutoFold Pro prevents the scuffing and marking on digital stocks that are caused by folding using conventional methods and can get through 6,240 A4 sheets per hour, Ferrostaal added.
