McPherson’s gets green boost with ISO 14001

The Victoria-based book printer was awarded the badge on 31 May through international standards body SAI Global.

National sales manager Greg Brown said: “We’re quite chuffed at how quickly the process got through our business. To actually engage SAI Global and get through it quickly and get it first time was great.”

“We had things like waste recycling and water recycling in place. A large degree of the certification process was formalising many things that were in place as a natural course of the business and then ensuring all employees were trained.”

Brown stressed that McPherson’s hadn’t got the badge in order to win over customers, but said the standard should help.

“Our clients can say that their supplier is certified and that helps them market their product. It has the knock-on effect that they’re seen to be doing the right thing which helps their sales and helps our volumes,” he said.

Brown said that while ISO 14001 usually wasn’t a requirement for wining work at the moment, “in the future it will become standard with clients such as with government bodies and large financial institutions”.

He said green certifications such as ISO 14001 were crucial to combat negative perceptions of print’s green credentials. “The industry needs all the help it can get.”
