New FX silver and gold not backwards compatible

Printers will have to buy a new Color 1000i to use the new Fuji Xerox silver and gold metallic toners, because the technology is not backwards-compatible, the manufacturer confirms.

The toners, which the company says are the first of their kind, will only be available on the upcoming Color 1000i Press, due to launch in Australia on March 1.

Fuji Xerox Australia hardware marketing manager Jay Daley says there are ‘technical limitations’ preventing the toners from being retofitted on older models, and they use a different application process to regular toners.

From a new digital front end to possible toner application differences there were be a host of reasons why simply hot swapping clear toner from a 1000 with metallic toner from a 1000i isn’t possible”.” he says.

“However our commitment is to continuously work with our customers to help them leverage our portfolio of industry leading products and technology to grow their business.

Fuji Xerox print customers contacted by ProPrint when the toners were announced by the American branch of the manufacturer were universally enthusiastic about the technology and its ability to enhance print work.

Daley says the manufacturer will work with customers to facilitate upgrades from the 1000s to the 1000i so they can use the metallic toners.

“We will do everything we can to accommodate their needs,” he says.

Fuji Xerox says the new toners make the 1000i the first xerographic production printer to offer either metallic gold or silver colours, and says they will be able to print on dark-coloured media for the first time.

It says printers of catalogues, direct mails, flyers, postcards and business cards will benefit most from the technology as they ‘can add marketing effects and improve the value added to each print, such as giving them a high-class look and seasonal sense’.

The 1000i is essentially an upgrade to the Color 1000 and maintains the top level model’s focus on the high end professional market with a print speed of 100 prints a minute on media up to 350gsm, along with upgraded software.
