Opus on growth surge with UK partners and inkjet plans

The diversified trans-Tasman group has revealed strategic alliances with two UK book printers and hinted at further tie-ups in the US.

Chief executive Cliff Brigstocke told ProPrint that the alliances with Hobbs the Printers and MPG Books Group (UK) are part of a global push as the market changes from regional to global procurement.

“The alliances will offer on-shore printing of time sensitive, short run products for publishers in the UK with COS in Singapore continuing to look after the long-run work,” he said.

In return, Opus will be able to offer the UK companies similar services for print runs in the Asia Pacific region, while plans for US expansion are set to be revealed in coming months.

Brigstocke also admitted the company is “seriously considering” floating on the NZX, following strong financial performance.

While he was reluctant to confirm recent reports that Opus recorded an NZ$27m operating profit last year, he said that “revenue was well over NZ$100M and in terms of profit the company is one of the more successful in the sector”.

He also said Opus was looking at high-volume inkjet for its Ligare facility in Sydney.

“We have a team at the London book fair, and part of their mission is to shortlist the inkjet technology in the UK,” he said.
