OSS Digital develops green pitch with Designjet

OSS Digital director Greg Edkins (pictured) first viewed the L65500 at last year’s PacPrint event, and was particularly attracted to its use of latex inks.

“I left the show thinking this latex inks printer was the future. When you factor its production capabilities with the eco-friendly nature of the latex inks it is a winning combination,” he said.

OSS purchased the L65500 through reseller Celmac late last year, and has marketed the press’s green credentials to its client base, particularly David Jones. OSS recently became the retail chain’s sole retail signage supplier.

“The first month we produced David Jones’ work on this printer, we sent them an email telling them we had printed their job on the most environmentally friendly machinery on the market. That messaging is important for clients who are environmentally conscious,” Edkins said.

The press has also allowed the company to expand its wide-format offering into the production of 2.2m-wide light-box images. The move continues a period of growth for the company, which has expanded its headcount from five staff to 35 since shifting its focus from the general signage market to the retail signage market five years ago.

Edkins also praised the resolution produced on the L65500, which he said is “a big thing for us”.

“If a client has spent thousands on photography they expect the best reproduction possible, and this is particularly true for the high-end retail market,” he said.

“The print speeds on this Designjet are fast, but the resolution is outstanding and the colour gamut excellent.”

The company also praised the machine’s automation.

“One of the keys to success is a machine that doesn’t require constant attention by the operator,” Edkins said.

“We load this printer at night, send down a bunch of prints and go home with confidence the jobs will be completed. Most days we output around 120 metres overnight. Being able to do this means we save time and money and can push through more work.”

The company, based in the suburb of Leichhardt, already operates a series of Designjet printers, including two Designjet Z6100s.
