Co-owner Carl Mendelle said that after investing more than $1.3 million on new machinery in the past three months, it was time to focus on filling the machines with work, cutting overheads and maximising profit margins.
“We’ve probably spent our lot for this year,” he told ProPrint.
The Perth firm plans to wait about 12 months before it starts thinking about new investments, he said.
Mendelle said Discus had invested $500,000 on the wide-format Titan, which started production on 20 September.

That followed the $800,000-$850,000 purchase of Australia’s second HP Indigo 7600 in July and the investment in a Jeti 1224 UV HDC flatbed inkjet in December.
Mendelle said Discus was continuing to increase its revenue, partly thanks to its commercial digital production arm, Discus on Demand, which it opened in July 2011.
The division has grown faster than expected in the past 14 months to now provide 20% of the firm’s turnover, he said. Discus was forced to order the Indigo 7600 ahead of schedule to keep up with the above-forecast growth, he added.
Discus Digital Print has 32 staff and operates out of Mt Hawthorn, while Discus on Demand’s eight staff are based at West Leederville.
