Printers are better connected: interview with Anthony Merrilees

What will you be discussing at your seminar?

The session I will be doing is called ‘Lessons from the Field’, so I will be focusing on the kinds of issues and pressure points myself and my colleague business advisors have observed in the printing industry, along with some of the things that printing businesses can do to improve their business performance.

Why should printers care about Enterprise Connect?

Enterprise Connect offers comprehensive, confidential advice and support to eligible Australian small and medium businesses to help them transform and reach their full potential. The service is delivered through a national network of centres and around 100 experienced business advisers and facilitators. Our services include business reviews delivered at no charge to businesses, grant assistance to implement recommendations flowing from the business review and a range of tailored innovation services to meet individual business needs.

Why should visitors attend your talk?

Enterprise Connect is in a unique position to comment on the industry given the large number of printing businesses we have assisted. We have also been able to share information across the Enterprise Connect network nationally through our own printing and publishing network. So we feel that as a network we have a lot we can share with industry.

Would you like to see more printers take advantage of Enterprise Connect?

While we have quite a good take-up rate from the industry, we would definitely like as many eligible businesses as possible taking advantage of all the services Enterprise Connect offers
to industry.

What stops more printers from utilising the service?

Many printing businesses are time poor, focused on “doing the work” and don’t necessarily have the opportunity to be able to sit down and review their business performance.

What kind of feedback do you hear from printers who have utilised Enterprise Connect?

The feedback that we have received from the printing industry has been excellent. The business review program has received a very high rate of client satisfaction and the majority of our printing clients go on to implement one or a number of improvement recommendations identified in the business review process.

Name one or two common ways you help printing companies?

I think that printing businesses need to be aware of how the industry is changing and be prepared to think strategically, and to review and transform their business models to meet the changing business environment.

Tell us about any recent print campaign that made an impact on you?

The Energy Australia Treadmill print campaign, where the bulldog is running on the treadmill.

Name one thing to make people proud and optimistic about working in print?

The motivation and enthusiasm of business owners in the print industry to embrace change and look at continuous improvement opportunities for their businesses.
