Quality and reliability drive Doran Printing

A strong belief in quality and reliability has driven Doran Printing’s success. And to MD Shane Doran, that means quality in staff, equipment and the finished product, because, as Shane says, the latter isn’t possible without the first two.

“We realise the quality of our staff and work is the backbone of our business. So we only employ the best people who are proud of their achievements and the work they produce. Most of our 13 staff have completed their apprenticeships with us and are still here – indeed, two have been here for more than 20 years, with several for more than ten.”

If he sounds proud, he is. The culture and work ethic Shane has nurtured at the company he began with his brother, Michael in 1984, is an important part of its growth. The other is its equipment.

First Spica in Aust/NZ
Over the years, Doran Printing has converted to a Komori shop. It installed the first Spica press in Australia and New Zealand in October, 2005 — a four-colour, 29-inch perfector (pictured) from CPI Group. Its full CIP4 data compatibility enabled an advanced digital workflow, while reduced operator workload due to extensive automation increased production efficiency. The latest addition is a five-colour Lithrone 29-inch press, commissioned earlier this year.

“This greater level of automation on the LS529 has been brilliant,” Shane said. “We have increased productivity by some 25 per cent, along with the bonus of achieving a quality product with a lot less effort, much to the delight of our machinists!”

Doran Printing’s production manager, Shaun Hammersley, said, “After looking at some alternatives, we felt that the Lithrone gave us the best overall way forward. It uses the same sized plates, blankets and wash rolls as our Spica, which has obvious benefits, but it also had a smaller footprint and uses less power than others we looked at. We believe that it also had some better automation features than others, such as the plate-changing without bending. All this leads to ease of operation and better production, which has the bonus of happier staff.”

Well-placed trust
Doran Printing bought the Spica to complement its existing five-colour Lithrone machine, which was regularly being overloaded.

Shane said, “As it was the first one in the country, we had to trust Gerard Wintle, Iain Sim and the CPI company that it would live up to their promises. Once again, they proved that our trust was not misplaced.”

As for the new Lithrone, Shane says it’s been very well received. “The operators love using it. Our previous Lithrone machine was a 1995 model, so there has been a big jump in our automation level, which they appreciate. All our staff, in all departments from prepress through to finishing, really care about the quality of work they produce, and are focused on creating satisfied clients who receive their work on time and correctly. The Spica and Lithrone make that task an easy one to achieve.”
