Reader Reaction: Sustainability

Clients are much better educated about the environmental credentials of print now, and expect that what they buy meets reasonable eco standards, including FSC, PEFC and carbon neutral paper, low-solvent and alcohol use, vegetable-based ink and other sustainability issues across their supply chain. Certification to ISO standards or completion of the SGP programme is still seen as necessary. However, the most significant change is an expectation that companies are truthful and transparent about their offering as well as independently verifiable.

We have noticed a decrease in the importance of environmental credentials for customers. After FSC was first introduced in 2006, there was definitely a groundswell in the uptake of this certification. This was a representation of the demand and importance that was placed on FSC by the market. However, the use of this logo in our market segment has dropped off considerably. Over the past few years the importance of environmental credentials for the market has decreased. The importance of saving money at all costs has increased to unsustainable levels.

I have found that in recent times, particularly the past two to three years, my direct client base have focused on costs more than environmental credentials. The industry hit a slump five to seven years ago and its main focus was survival. This was apparent in the broader marketplace, where ISO credentials as a selling tool were overshadowed by cost-driven savings. However, I have clients whose entire focus and mantra s dealing with a company that is focused on the environment, and how that company maintains its environmental standards.
