Roland DG supporting next-gen signage students

Roland DG Australia has donated a Soljet Pro4 XR-640 printer cutter to the signage department at TAFE Illawarra, a brand new addition to the TAFE’s current printer cutter which was provided by Roland DG five years ago. Roland DG is also working closely with TAFE to revamp the signage course curriculum – the new course will have additional content on the manufacturing and business side of the industry. This will be delivered in the form of competency based training to prepare signage graduates, providing them with the skills and knowledge necessary to take on the modern signage industry. TAFE Wollongong graduate, Anthony Jones finished a Certificate 3 in signage a year ago and started his own business making private and commercial murals using the older machine. He believes the new machine will be valuable for the next group of signage students learning to use it.

He says, “It makes sense, when students do jump out into the field, they are going to be able to work with the current technology.” Roland DG says the XR-640 uses the latest environmentally friendly Eco-Sol Max 2 inks and is capable of printing to a wide range of materials including vinyls, banners and textiles. Roland DG says the students will be able to produce a range of items from POP displays to soft signage and vehicle wrapping. Signage department head teacher Ian Squire believes it is important for students to receive the correct training on industry standard equipment before they enter the field and adds, “The industry is so fast moving and revolving.” The delivery of the XR-640 has come just in time for TAFE staff who will receive training with the printer before the updated signage course commences this year.
