Scott Print dominates PICAs

Scott Print has enjoyed its best-ever PICAs result in the first ceremony since the demise of long-term awards rival Geon.

Geon narrowly finished on top in 2012 by winning 12 categories to Scott Print's 11. This time Scott Print walked away with 38 medals, including 16 gold, 17 silver and five bronze. It also won the Kodak Best of Category Award.

The Perth firm was so dominant at the 24 August awards night that the next closest competitor was Quality Press, which picked up four gold medals.

There were two-gold hauls for Discus on Demand, Great Circle Design & Animation, Labelworld WA, Percival Print & Packaging and Pilpel Print.

Eleven others each claimed one gold medal: Bunbury Print, Clarity Print Image, Classic Bookbinders, Fast Finishing Services, LabelForce, PMP, Rural Press Mandurah, SW Precision Print, WA Newspapers, Worldwide Printing Solutions O'Connor and Royal Perth Hospital, which won the inaugural 3D award.

Five categories had no winner.

Scott Print manager John Scott said the firm's record haul was due to its emphasis on technological investment, staff development and self-improvement.

He also said Geon's demise had had only a minimal effect on local competition.

"There was amazing work from our competitors, including Worldwide, Percival Print, Quality Press, Discus on Demand, Pilpel Print and Advance Press, so if anything the bar has been raised in the Perth print industry," he told ProPrint.

"To stay competitive in the market, Scott Print, and all of our competitors, have to be continuously improving as we’re not just competing with ourselves, we’re also competing within a maturing and changing industry."

Scott said the firm placed a strong focus on feedback from clients – and had already let them know of its awards success.

"We have had a significant marketing push since Saturday night. So far, this has included an email blast to clients and social media, which will be followed up with targeted print material. We have had fantastic feedback from our valued clients," he said.
