Signarama tackle staffing shortage

Signarama is teaming up with the NSW Govt to offer free pre-apprenticeship courses in response to signage industry staff challenges. Some 20 spots are available free of charge to high school students, who will undertake five weeks of training in core units of the Certificate III, then complete one week of practical experience in a Signarama store. Working with the NSW Construction and Property Services Itab, Signarama have secured funding for the pre-apprenticeship course which is the first of its kind for the state. Signarama national director Evan Foster says the signage industry has lagged behind other trades-based services in apprentice numbers, “We are recognising that we are getting busier and we need staff to keep up with the demand.

“The biggest concern from franchisees was access to good staff, having production people with the necessary skill set as well as attitude to meet demand.” Foster cannot explain why numbers are dwindling but hopes the free pre-apprenticeships will address staffing challenges not just in individual stores, but across the industry. He says those interested in the course will benefit from being part of a ‘vibrant’ industry. “You are making something tangible, everything is custom made, every product and every day is different, you also get to be a problem solver,” he says. “There is always something changing, whether it’s new technology or materials.” Itab will consider running the programme nationally if it is successful. Recruitment for course has started now, to express your interest visit your nearest Signarama store or go online.
