Sydney printers celebrate environmental achievements at government ceremony

The awards ceremony, held in Sydney earlier this month, brought together green-minded businesses from across NSW, including banks and major corporate players.

Focus Press was one of only two companies out of the 550-strong contingent to achieve the Gold Sustainability Advantage recognition, while Bright Print secured silver and LYG received a bronze award.

Focus managing director David Fuller said it was recognition of years of hard work.

“We have been involved in this scheme for about five years, and prior to this we were part of another industry partnership program,” he said.

“It has made us a much stronger business. Before this year’s awards, we had a look at our savings and we have saved over a million dollars through our sustainability work.”

Fuller said that the company had effectively cut isopropyl alcohol out of its fountain solution and made massive savings in energy and wastage costs.

Lindsay Yates Group managing director Paul Richardson described the positive impact of the company’s sustainability program as a “three-way hit”.

“I think you have to look at it from a customer’s point of view because they want to know that your business is sustainable,” he said.

“You also want your staff to know that they working for a company that is looking after the environment, and obviously you can look at the cost savings as well.

Richardson added that being part of the program had helped with the company’s current endeavour to achieve ISO accreditation.

Bright Print director Debbie Burgess said that the benefit of being able to discuss sustainability with other members of the program has been positive.

“We are all learning and all in this together, and it is great to be able to put our heads together and share ideas.”

The NSW government said the program is designed to work with businesses to help them understand sustainability and better their environmental and financial performance.
