At the gala function, which took inspiration from the hotly contested Melbourne Cup, judges awarded gold medals to 17 companies across 26 categories.

The Media Super Award was shared between Adams Print and Print Impressions after judges couldn’t decide and declared a dead-heat.

Bambra Press won the coveted Heidelberg Award for Excellence in Craft for its work on the ‘Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner Invite’.

PicPress showed its dominance in the digital photobook printing sector by racking up four bronzes, three silvers, three golds and the Currie Group Award for the most innovative use of imaging in print.

PicPress executive director Michael Warshall (pictured left) said the company’s success was a mark of the quality of its staff and prestigious client base.

“We cleaned up this year,” he said.

“The awards give us an opportunity to see where we fit in among our peers and our success is a reflection of the quality of both our staff and our customers.”

PICA Victoria chairman Trevor Hone congratulated the winners on their “creativity, commitment, innovation and passion” and said the Melbourne Cup tie-in proved to be a hit with guests.

“The night went off very well. Emma Freedman was a fabulous host, horse racing commentator Jack Styring’s PICA Cup went brilliantly and we had a really good attendance of almost 300 people,” said Hone.

He added that he was excited to see how the winning entries would perform at the National Print Awards.

“Rod Urquhart, the chairman of judges, said the quality was as high as ever and that there were a few frontrunners for the National Print Awards among the entries.”

NSW printers will be looking to meet the success of their Melbourne counterparts at the state’s PICA Awards this Friday.
