WA printer spends $850,000 on Australia’s second HP Indigo 7600

Discus co-owner Carl Mendelle told ProPrint the business would be able to slash turnaround times when it combined the 7600 with its one-year-old Indigo 5000.

The 7600, which will be the second of its kind in Australia, cost around $800,000-$850,000 and should be installed in about a week, according to Mendelle.

“It’s a great machine, much faster and seems to be typical Indigo quality,” he said.

Mendelle said he had ordered the Indigo 7600 at Drupa after going to Germany to research digital offset and inkjet technology.

He said Discus had not considered any other manufacturer as it had been very happy with the 5000.

Mendelle initially had his eye on the B2 Indigo 10000, which he thought “would have been a total game-changer in Perth”, but decided it was too expensive.

He opted for the 7600 due to its 160ppm speed and its white ink, varnishing and ‘digital embossing’ capabilities, he said.

The embossing function will allow Discus to bring that work in-house and provide it with a profitable value-add, according to Mendelle.

He said the 7600 had not been ordered to do any specific work, but was expected to fill up quickly – as had happened with the 5000.

“We buy the equipment and the work tends to follow,” he said.
