Wellcom’s print management strategy surges with Commonwealth Bank win

Craig Bevan, chief operating officer of Wellcom, told ProPrint that taking on two such large accounts in quick succession posed no problem because they were "very different models".

The multimillion-dollar NAB deal is a full-service print management contract, while the deal with the CBA is to provide supply chain support and the deployment of the OneMarket print management technology platform, he said.

"One is based in Victoria and the other in New South Wales. While there will be an overarching steering team, they will be managed by separate teams in different states." The CBA deal will be overseen by Melinda Phillips, general manager of Wellcom Print Management.

CBA's executive manager of print operations management, Jason Penrose, told ProPrint that Wellcom's tender had stood out due to the quality of its technology and the breadth of its capability.

Penrose said CBA had been handling all its print management in-house, but decided to outsource part of the work after reviewing the model – partly to gain access to OneMarket. He said the bank had been impressed that Wellcom had the flexibility to combine the two models.

Bevan said integrating OneMarket with the bank's Ariba On-Demand procurement platform would be the key to the deal.

"That's quite a big piece of work for both parties. We'll be engaging Ariba in the coming days to talk about how that will integrate. It's early days at this stage."

Penrose said integration between the two platforms would be kept to a minimum.

He would not be drawn on the length or value of the contract.

Bevan told ProPrint that Wellcom was still calculating the value of the contract, but that it was smaller than the NAB deal.

He said the two wins would represent less than 10% of the group's total revenue, but were still a "pretty significant" lift to Wellcom Print Management.

Wellcom's 2011-12 full-year net revenue was $55.8 million.

Wellcom Print Management was formed when Wellcom took full ownership of iPrint, the joint venture it had formed with Australia Post.
