Xeikon to launch liquid toner web system at drupa

The battle for digital high volume webfed printing at drupa in June is intensifying, with Xeikon the latest to announce it will have a system on show – its Trillium One. The Xeikon Trillium is a liquid toner technology, which was first shown at at drupa 2012. Liquid toner is the same technology concept used by HP Indigo, although the Trillium will have significant differences. The brand-new Trillium One four-colour press on show at drupa is capable of running at 60 meters (200 feet) per minute at 1200dpi, with a print width of 500mm (19.7 inches). The mechanical engineering is provided by Miyakoshi – which also provides the chassis for the proposed Ryobi digital press.

The liquid toner ink – branded Tonnik – comes in 10kg tubs and is manufactured at Xeikon’s existing toner plant using a modified version of the process used to make its dry toners. Xeikon had hoped to place a beta machine in a French print house last year, but that didn’t work out so it has been running jobs for the customer from its Belgium headquarters. Xeikon will take orders later this year and have the press available to install in third quarter 2017. According to Xeikon the Trillium One combines cost-effectiveness, high quality and speed for digital printing performance. It claims Trillium One is the missing link in the industry for high volume direct marketing materials and publishing such as cataloguess. Many of these applications will be demonstrated during the show. The company says its high resolution imaging heads and toner particle size of less than two microns create a winning combination. A Trillium theatre on the booth will stage five live daily demos. The company says the press would enable jobs with high ink coverage in excess of 40 – 60 per cent that were currently uneconomic using inkjet printing. It is designed to produce volumes of between five million and 15 million A4 pages per month.
