A timeline of TRMC and PVCA’s recent activities

Both The Real Media Collective (TRMC) and the Print & Visual Communications Association (PVCA) have embarked on several activities in recent times.

Here’s a quick rundown of their latest announcements and restructures:

TRMC

7 April: Addressing paper supply issues and Ovato ceasing heatset printing in New Zealand 

Mill closures, supply and demand imbalances, COVID-induced international freight issues, the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on softwood supply, extended UPM industrial action and global volume shortages – plus a refusal of many shipping lines to dock in New Zealand have created a “perfect storm” for paper supply, according to The Real Media Collective CEO Kellie Northwood.

Northwood also spoke about TRMC member, Ovato, which recently ceased its heatset printing in New Zealand.

31 March: TRMC discusses ‘disappointing’ budget

Northwood gave the recent Budget announcement a 6.5 out of 10 rating, while welcoming the commitments made to apprenticeship and training support.

24 March: Charles Watson announced as one of the speakers at PacPrint

Charles Watson, general manager for IR, policy and governance for TRMC will present a session at PacPrint around employment issues facing SMEs, including contracts, awards, compliance, casual employment and how to avoid common pitfalls.

7 March: Northwood addresses if bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead in the industry

Northwood took the stance that bias, in all forms, makes it difficult for everybody, women included, to advance. 

2 March: TRMC & Fundraising Institute Australia secure charity postage relief

TRMC and Fundraising Institute Australia (FIA) successfully negotiate with Australia Post across Charity Mail to assist during the COVID-19 recovery period.

26 January: TRMC sets up team for this year’s CEO Sleepout

In forming a national team to raise funds for the homeless, TRMC called on members in the print and visual communications industry across each state and territory to sleep rough for one night to raise funds for the Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout.  

16 December 2021: TRMC inks industry partnership with Responsible Wood

TRMC forged a partnership with standard development organisation, Responsible Wood, which manages the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) in A/NZ.

7 December 2021: Matt Aitken takes on a second term as chairman of The Real Media Collective

Matt Aitken, CEO of IVE Group, was voted in for a second term as Chairman with Ovato CEO James Hannan vice chair and new board member Rodney Frost, CEO of The Lamson Group, serving as Treasurer.

24 November 2021: TRMC AGM exec exchange focuses on COP26

TRMC prepared for its end of year Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 2, which included an executive exchange on COP26 commitments across carbon net zero emissions and deforestation targets to lead this year’s agenda.

28 September 2021: TRMC increases members, stays in the black in COVID year

TRMC released its annual figures for the 2021 financial year reporting an increase in membership, decrease in operational costs and $50,336 in the bank, a 49 per cent increase on what was expected given COVID impacts.

PVCA

31 March: PVCA discusses ‘disappointing’ budget

PVCA vice-president Walter Kuhn called the Budget a “cash for splash election budget”, saying that for individuals, it’s built on promises but for businesses, there wasn’t much to it.

17 March: PVCA suspends state-based PICA competitions

PVCA made the decision to suspend the state-based Printing Industry Creativity Awards (PICAs) competitions and presentations for 2022 considering recent events, with a focus solely on the National Print Awards this year.

28 February: PVCA’s new national president Peter Clark discusses amendments to the Corporations Act 2001

The Temporary COVID Measures, which allows virtual meetings such as AGMs and electronic communications, has recently been made permanent following the amendment of the Corporations Act 2001, causing more damage to print and/or mailing businesses, according to Clark.

2 February: Peter Clark elected new president of Print & Visual Communication Association

Industry veteran Peter Clark was elected the new president of PVCA, replacing Walter Kuhn who is now the vice president of the organisation.

10 November 2021: PVCA announces the winners of the NPAs

Established nearly 40 years ago, the National Print Awards recognise and encourage the achievement of excellence in print in Australia. Over the years, the Awards have evolved alongside the industry, to represent all aspects of our diverse and exciting sector.

20 July 2021: Back to losses for PVCA in 2020 financial accounts

PVCA reported loss of $583,344 during the 2020 financial year ending 31 December 2020, going back to red after a year of profit in 2019.
