Armidale Museum of Printing celebrates 10th birthday

The museum, which opened in 2001, has offered visitors access to the antique machinery of FT Wimble & Co, a printer with a long and interesting Australian history.

Party guests will be able to check out the collection, which includes Albion treadle platen and proofing presses, linotype, guillotines, wire stitches, book presses, a gold blocker and more than 1,000 printing blocks.

Guests will be treated to some typewriter-shaped cake and will have the opportunity to play a number of print-related games.

Museum curator Benjamin Thorn said printing is one of his greatest passions and is in the process of putting together a book documenting the industry’s history in Australia.

“I have been interviewing some old printers and getting their memories and a lot of insight,” he said.

“I’m discovering printing has a truly horrendous occupational health and safety history. Toilets exploding because of the cocktail of chemicals pre-press workers used to flush down the toilet!”

The festivities will kick off at 10.30am on Saturday so if you’re holidaying in Northern NSW for Easter, drop in for some print-related fun.
