Australian printers nonplussed by International Print Day

Global print promotion initiative International Print Day has failed to reach local printers, with the proposed mega event registering virtual zero interest in Australia.

The initiative coming from the US is in its first year, with organisers hoping to galvanise printers in ten countries to connect with each other and promote print.

However it is likely to fall flat here, as efforts to spread the word haven’t taken priority for industry companies. Printing Industries Association of Australia CEO Bill Healey says, “We’re not tapped into it as well as we would like.”

Some businesses like Acorn Press director Craig Foley says he has not heard about the event but agrees it would be beneficial. He says, “Anything that promotes print would be helpfull.”

All Print Matters owner Tony Tanner says he also has not heard of it, but says, “It would be good for a lot of businesses, and they could do with it, and connect with each other more.”

All Clear Print and Signs owner Anthony DeStefani says he has no indication that it is taking place either but says “Anything like that is great for the print industry.”

Leading print advocate and Two Sides Australia executive director Kellie Northwood says, “We should be promoting it from all our channels and supporting the Australian industry.”

Northwood says, “Any opportunity to talk about the industry is a good thing.”

Planning for the international event began late October late last year, with the vision of a 24 hour global virtual conference in mind.

The event is set to take place on October 8 including all countries that want to be involved, regardless of the time zone.

The day encourages participants from printing, marketing and graphic arts companies around the world to get involved, to share information about business, products and services. It aims to provide participants with the opportunity to network globally and expand their connections within the industry.

Healey encourages the print community to use the emerging social media to network and participate in the conversation and reinforce print has a place in all channels.

He says, “The smart use of print with digital technology should be encouraged to have a better return on investment.”

Printers can join the conversation and share information related to print and integrated marketing on al social channels, include the hash tag: #IPD14

Or they can join the twitter buzz every Thursday 06:00 AEST through the hash tag:  #PrintChat
