Council bans shop posters

The Council amended the advertising section of its Development Control Plan, to specifically prohibit "signage that dominates the shopfront windows and/or the shopfront and is excessive and detracts from the visual amenity of the shopfront".

Also banned were flashing lights and extended duration ‘sold’ signs on real estate placards. Council has yet to decide what proportion of a shop front it will allow signage in, and says its ruling will affect ‘hundreds’ of shops.

Opponents of the ruling claim it is politically motivated.

The banning of retail graphics in Ku-ring-gai bucks the trend of Councils across Australia, which have generally been relaxing rules on signage, and in so doing, providing a major boost to the wide format industry as retailers embrace the benefits of print advertising.
