CQU takes on Kodak Digimaster technology

CQU currently produces in excess of 40 million impressions per annum and began operating the three Digimaster E125’s in January, enabling the uni to increase its production levels substantially with a variety of work including, student study material, course notes, research reports, newsletters, perfect bound self published books, manuals and graduation books.

University Publishing Unit manager Tony Bertolotti, says the Digimaster E125’s are the key component in increasing production levels, improving work flow and expanding current printing capabilities.

“The Digimaster systems will enable us to do this by streamlining our processes and allowing us to receive printing requests via the Directaprint software for web submissions, delivering finished print jobs more efficiently with shorter lead times,” explains Bertolotti.

“This will be achieved by integrating Directaprint with the university’s current LDAP system, allowing staff to send work direct to the print room. University staff will also have the ability to access and order certain stock jobs, such as business cards and other university stationery by using templates available on the university web site.”

Bertolotti says CQU will also be using the Kodak SmartBoard software technology in conjunction with existing software packages to develop and deliver student material and is planning to fully utilise the fully integrated inline system, including inline punching, booklet making and perfect binding.

“As part of the pre-installation process, Kodak has pre-trained staff to use this new system and its innovative software, so when the machines are installed they are able to immediately begin operation and fulfil job orders,” concludes Bertolotti.

The Digimaster E125 has great appeal for high-volume black and white print producers like Universities, TAFE colleges and schools and attracts this type of audience because of the exceptional image quality, extensive inline finishing options,
ability to print on up to 364mm x 470mm sized paper, intuitive web based user interface and an optional production scanner.

Jon Field, national manager, Digital Printing, Kodak Graphic Solutions and Services, says universities, like CQU are leading the way with these technologies and understand the significant benefits and impact when utilising Kodak systems with their innovative software and print capabilities.

“We are keen to get the machines installed and fully operational, so CQU can benefit from the systems speed, reliability and ease of use, reinforcing that Kodak’s high volume digital print solutions are truly best-in-class systems backed by our commitment to excellence,” concludes Field.

CQU’s Publishing Unit is based at the Rockhampton Campus in Central Queensland and the university currently provides more than 750 courses to more than 22,600 students from campuses based in Central Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Fiji.
