Digitalpress turns iPhone pics into postcards with AusPost app

The free app allows smartphone users to take a photo, edit the image and then compose a message. This file is automatically delivered to Digitalpress, said managing director Theo Pettaras.

"It usually arrives within 24 hours. We don't print them as and when they come. We wait for them to build up and then we have certain days of the week we print the jobs," he told ProPrint.

The postcards are printed on a Kodak NexPress 3300 and reach Australian letterboxes within four days, he added.

Australia Post launched the app in July 2012 and partnered with Digitalpress in December.

Pettaras said the boutique Sydney firm had decided to keep the relationship private until it was certain the system was operating perfectly.

"There weren't any teething problems, it went smoothly from the start, but we wanted to be very confident with it," he said.

"Australia Post wanted a seamless process – someone who could take the data and get it from the iPhone app to the press. This is a typical example of where web-to-print really works."

Pettaras said he was unable to reveal print volumes, but that the app had been enjoying steady growth. He said the 14-staff operation would now help promote the app through social media.

Digitalpress has set up a filter system to catch about 500 swearwords, because Australia Post forbids offensive postcards to be sent. Staff also perform manual checks, said Pettaras.
