EFI Reggiani increases focus on sustainability

The move towards green is driving EFI Reggiani’s transformation, with the company making efforts to improve its sustainability efforts, says EFI senior vice-president and general manager for Reggiani Adele Genoni.

At EFI Connect, she mentioned that the three biggest drivers within the textile industry are:

  • Sustainability: improving green production and management, creating a circular economy, and increasing the useful life of products
  • Big data management and Artificial Intelligence: incorporating machine learning and robotics to have flexibility in the workforce
  • Technical textiles for any application within industries such as fashion, healthcare, home, and others.

“What we have done so far is keep on the edge of technology and becoming a one-stop shop for those in the industry,” she said.

“We have built on a continuous ink recirculation system, proprietary electronics and software, higher uniformity printing modes, and new recirculation printhead integration. With the Reggiani range, we aim to satisfy the needs of both small scale customers and mass production customers.

“Our focus is on driving digital innovation but doing so in a sustainable fashion.”

There are three green processes that Reggiani will be increasing its attention towards:

  • Direct to fabric sublimation: allowing print to go directly onto fabric instead of paper, eliminating the need for steaming and washing
  • Greenest pigment technology: creating no requirements for steaming, washing and stentering
  • Denim dyeing: finding new ways to reduce chemical usage, higher indigo intensity, reduced water usage, operating costs and deeper sulphur dyeing shades with no steaming

“We are working on innovative projects to stay a leader in technology, expand proprietary ink production range, develop green processes, develop different applications to reach more end market segments, and use Artificial Intelligence to offer solutions with this technology,” she said.

Two of Reggiani’s recent focuses have been the EFI Reggiani Bolt and EFI Reggiani Colors.

“Launched a little less than a year ago, the Bolt has now printed more than three million metres. We have three Bolts running (one in Italy and two in Pakistan), two Bolts under installation and six Bolt contracts signed to date globally,” Genoni said.

“The adopters of Bolt were looking at these technologies to enlarge their business opportunities, and the Bolt opportunity is far more than a rotary. It provides a fast turnaround time and shorter time to market, enhanced uptime and minimum set up time, one printer for high volumes and customer consistency.

“It also provides better, richer and a wider colour gamut reproduction and smooth transitions, richer and more detailed design, greener manufacturing with reduced water and power consumption, and reduction of spaces and inventory related to equipment.”

Genoni also mentioned that Fiery DFEs for Reggiani Bolt is in production and is likely to be out later this year.

Another of the focuses are on the EFI Reggiani Colors, what EFI says is the “first industrial printer with up to 12 colours and is able to achieve the widest gamut in the industry”.

The machine can be used in three ways: up to 12 colours in a row, 6 + 6 colours, and 11 colours + 1 for chemistry.

Genoni also mentioned that on the ink side, the company has created a full range of ink capabilities and to finish, will be continuing its efforts on the Mezzera pre and post treatment process.
