Fuji Xerox Australia picks design comp winners

Eight graphic designers from across Australia have won a $1000 Apple store gift card after winning a Fuji Xerox Australia competition which has showcased how digital print enhancement such as gold and silver metallics can be made through the Iridesse Production Press.

The winners were judged on specific criteria including best use of theme, design appeal and accurate file set up for the Iridesse CMYK+ print.

Kellie Northwood, CEO The Real Media Collective and Theo Pettaras of PIAA and DigitalPress Australia were among the judges to decide the winners from 100 entries nationally.

Pettaras was an early adopter of the Iridesse, and has worked with the technology for over a year now. He says, "We looked at originality, and that they had utilised the features of the press, and understood its capabilities. Design was important, but the utilisation of the technology was key.

"You can not just throw a press like this into an organisation and expect them to create wonderful work, it requires knowledge, and education for your clients on how to make their prints more engaging."

The eight winners are Lyndal Anderson, designer, Intertype, Victoria; Rehan Saiyed, owner, StormWorldwide, Victoria; Joshua Costalonga, student, West Press, South Australia; David Spiers, designer, Eckersley Print Group, Queensland; Amanda Jones, designer, Who Printing, New South Wales; Michael Glucz, developer and digital strategist, Test Lab Software, Victoria; Gayle Marshall, designer, Suburban Design and Construct, Western Australia and Evie Smalley, designer, Snap Circular Quay, New South Wales

Intertype's Anderson says, “As a designer working within the print industry, the competition proved both exciting and a challenge with the use of CMYK+ a must to bring the theme to life. I am a happy winner, but I know I worked for it and there is a sense of achievement in that."

For Michael Glucz of Testlabs, “It was a fun competition, highly personalised throughout and not just for the sake of personalisation. With a background in digital and print I was so pleased at how easy it was to set up the extra spot colours by using the guide provided, I got it right the first time.”

Roger Labrum, senior marketing manager, Graphic Communications Services, Fuji Xerox Australia, says,“We are very happy with both the caliber of entries and success of the competition. It was hard to decide on a Top 8 so many have gone on to receive a Highly Commended Award which will form part of an Iridesse™ Presentation Book. Furthermore, the real value has been the positive feedback with entrants requesting additional sample packs to send to their own clients. The competition is doing what we hoped in raising awareness about the value of print and in turn driving demand for our own customers and the industry itself.”
