GAMAA is opening applications for its $15,000 Industry Overseas Research Grant, which allows the beneficiary to travel and study with companies of their choosing around the world. Derek Williamson, digital imaging manager with West Australian Newspapers, was the 2014 winner. Williamson used his grant to explore trends in the UK and Europe in the continuous feed market, which he describes “as a new technology that plays a crucial role for long term sustainability of print and one that has the potential for substantial growth over coming years.”

Karen Goldsmith
Karen Goldsmith, executive director of GAMAA, says discovering the world’s best practice and sharing how it can be applied to the local market is critical to the sustainability of the Australian industry. She says, “The GAMAA grant presents a fantastic opportunity. We want to hear from those working in our industry who want to be part of the where to next thinking.” The association is looking for broad ranging proposals; research for the grant can be undertaken in marketing, new media, print, graphic design and other disciplines related to print. The winner must put together a research paper documenting their experience and how these learnings can be applied to the Australian market. Those keen to apply for the grant are encouraged to contact Goldsmith to discuss their proposal. Application forms are available from the GAMAA website, www.gamaa.net.au, and closing date is March 14, 2015. The winner will be announced at PrintEx 15, on May 13-15 next year, at the Sydney Showgrounds.
