Girlfriend goes digital

Teen magazine Girlfriend has modified its image, becoming an interactive digital pop-up magazine while publishing a quarterly print publication.

The monthly magazine published by Pacific Magazines was printed by Blue Star Web, a division of IVE. It had a circulation of 140,000 and published around 124 pages.

The new quarterly print version features a double-sided, glossy, foiled cover and premium finishes throughout and is a complete guide to the season ahead. It will be printed by Blue Star Web, a division of IVE Group.

The switch to digital for Girlfriend comes as a number of girls and women’s magazines have struggled in the last year in the wake of the move to mobile consumption. Bauer owned Dolly Magazine folded after 46 years in print due to low circulation numbers, while Cleo also folded.

Girlfriend says it will present an interactive digital magazine as a content vehicle that is fully enabled for sharing and shopping. It is hoping its always-on mobile offering will provide an immersive experience and content tailored to digital natives.
